Flying with your young baby

Just the thought of travelling with a baby can be daunting. Being prepared can make the whole experience stress free.

Flying with a baby?

Flying is stressful enough as it is. Adding a baby to the mix can intensify those stress levels even more. For new parents, it can be downright overwhelming.

Surviving your first flight with a baby is possible, and the bonus is, baby, travels for free.  Hey, we always need to look at the positives. Here are some tips to help you be the best prepared.

Flight time

If possible book your flight around your babies sleeping patterns. A well rested, and content baby will generally be happy and hopefully be more settled on the plane.

Get an aisle seat

For a couple of reasons taking an aisle seat is often a better choice. Being able to get up and walk the aisle if you need to settle the baby or if a dash to the toilets is necessary for a fresh nappy change. The aisle seat can be more convenient for you and less disruptive for other passengers.

Use the bathroom before boarding

It will be next to impossible to try and leave your child while on the plane. No one wants to be uncomfortable during a flight, take a bathroom break before boarding, it’s just one less thing to worry about.

Feed during take-off/landing

The best time to feed your baby is during take-off and landing. Their sucking action helps to equalise their ears during the process. Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding your baby, feeding your baby during these times can help alleviate pain in a babies ears.

Pack the carry-on

There’s nothing worse than realising your baby needs their nappy changed, and the nappies are in the back of the plane. Pack every essential thing your child will need in your carry-on. That includes an ample amount of nappies, change of clothes, bottles, and toys as required.

Choose a suitcase with wheels

Lastly, especially if you are flying solo with your baby, choose your luggage wisely. A bag with wheels is a lot easier to bring. Especially when you’re carrying your child in a harness on your chest. That way, you can freely move around the airport to your destination with ease.

Flying with your baby is a challenge, but not impossible. Following some of these tips can help ease the flight.

Finally, drive your family to the airport on the day of your flight. Leave your car with an airport car parking service, and take the shuttle to the airport. Enjoy your time with your child or children and don’t forget these tips on your way back.
